Set just metres from the sea, five-star Morukuru Ocean House is the perfect getaway retreat for a family wanting its own private slice of the wildly beautiful De Hoop Nature Reserve. The reserve itself is one of the Western Cape's most beloved wilderness areas, and the villa – well, it's five-star fabulous, with sleek accommodation (it sleeps 12), amazing views, outstanding service and top-class meals prepared by your private chef. There's plenty to do – take a guided, insightful marine walk, explore the dunes and rock pools and, between July and November, watch the whales and their calves.

With beautiful dining areas and a private kitchen, complete with its own chef and butler, Morukuru makes you feel like a truly important visitor. Dine indoors in the chic, ultra-elegant dining room, which offers amazing views and lush interiors, or take it easy with a picnic outside in the fynbos or down on the beach. The open-plan, book-lined lounge areas are perfect for evening chats, there's a sheltered pool and a garden with wide views of this amazing location.
Morukuru Ocean House can host 12 guests (eight adults and four children) in four large suites. No luxury has been spared – each suite has glass doors overlooking the ocean, eco-friendly decor in tasteful hues that are inspired by the surrounding fynbos and dunes, and lovely en-suite bathrooms with must-try toiletries. The beds are deep and comfortable, and each room has its own fireplace.
Take a nature walk, breathing in the salt air and admiring the coastal fynbos, the dunes and the ocean. Explore on a mountain bike, try your hand at sandboarding (perfect for working off calories), watch the whales, dolphins and seals, inspect the treasures in the rock pools and, in the heat of the afternoon, take a dip in the pool. Feeling sporty? Challenge the staff to a game of soccer in the bush, or beach volleyball.
Inspired by 'Operation Phoenix', the Morukuru Goodwill Foundation supports wildlife conservation and community initiatives in and around Madikwe Game Reserve. Key projects include partnerships with Molatedi Village, support for local schools and nature reserves, and the 'Safaris with a Purpose' project. Additionally, the 'Pack for a Purpose' initiative encourages travellers to bring supplies for community projects. A contribution of $5,20 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
A little-explored gem where hills roll into the ocean and nature reserves rub against golden sands.
