About Mount Etjo Safari Lodge

A historic conservation haven with hippos by the pool and 230-million-year-old footprints.

Halfway between Windhoek and Etosha, the Okonjati Game Reserve stretches across a landscape that's been loved back to life by one family's conservation dream. Founded by legendary game capturer Jan Oelofse (the man whose techniques inspired the film Hatari!), this historic refuge is where Namibia's Independence Declaration was signed in 1989. With flamingos wading in the dam, hippos grunting by the waterhole, and dinosaur footprints waiting up on the hillside, there's plenty to discover beyond the game drives. The lodge blends Moroccan-inspired architecture with genuine bush hospitality, whilst the Oelofse family's dedication to conservation – including a rhino orphanage and private school – adds real substance to your stay.

Property details

The property

Painted in distinctive terracotta hues with Moroccan arches and palm trees, the main lodge has a character all its own. The waterhole sits right out front, meaning you can watch hippos, nyala and porcupines from the bar whilst nursing a sundowner – not a bad way to spend an afternoon. The swimming pool occupies prime viewing real estate too, though you might need to vacate when elephants fancy a sip of chlorinated water over dam water. Dinners are served buffet-style in a rustic lapa around the campfire, showcasing home-cooked African cuisine and often featuring game meats. There's also a curio shop-cum-museum documenting the 1989 Independence signing, and free Wi-Fi in communal areas if you need to surface briefly.

The rooms

Accommodation ranges from standard twin-bedded options to luxury suites with jacuzzis and fireplaces. All are spacious with dark wood furnishings and en-suite bathrooms, plus the essentials: air-conditioning, ceiling fans, safes and mini-fridges. The suites add lounges to the mix, whilst at the top end sits the Villa – a stunner positioned partially on an island with 180-degree waterhole views. Think private pool, jacuzzi, satellite TV, fireplace, two king-size beds and optional private chef. It's worth noting that two rooms are wheelchair-accessible with grab rails and adapted facilities. Camping is also available at the aptly named Camp Dinosaur, located 3km away with private ablutions and waterhole views.
