About Msenge Bush Lodge

A well-rounded safari experience near the tail-end of the Garden Route.
South Africa's un-sung Eastern Cape is a diverse region of vast coastline, quaint seaside hamlets, remote wilderness and sprawling farmlands, many of which are being rehabilitated and re-stocked with native wildlife. Of its most attractive characteristics is its proximity: a day or two's drive from Cape Town along the picturesque Garden Route. Pumba Msenge Lodge sits on one of the region's best private game reserves, with superb views of a waterhole, plains and mountains beyond. Don't be fooled by its relative small size, however, for this reserve packs a punch - it's home to all of the Big Five and the genetically rare white lion.

Property details

The property

Everything is spacious and free-flowing thanks to the main area's semi-circle design - and everywhere you look, there's a spectacular view. The main area is a good mix of elegant and rustic with a thatched roof and glass-enclosed rooms, and the wrap-around deck, pool and shady loungers are perfect for midday siesta-ing. There's also a gym overlooking the plains and a spa with a variety of therapies. The central fire pit is always ablaze in the evening and is the ideal spot for star-gazing.

The rooms

The 12 glass-ensconced chalets are each elevated slightly above the canopy of thicket and overlooking the Zuurberg Mountains. The glass walls give a sense of a bedroom outdoors and all rooms have grand four-poster beds, a small sitting area, enormous ensuite bathrooms with deep bathtubs, double basins and showers, as well as extensive outdoor decking. Suites share an entrance but have two private bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms.

Activities

Pumba is not only easy to access by car or plane, it's also in a malaria-free area, an important designation for families with small children. Practicalities aside, the reserve has a lot going for it too. It's home to free-roaming Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant), plus one of Africa's only self-sustaining population of white lion. Besides game drives, there are a number of activities on offer: guided bush walks, night drives, bass fishing expeditions, and even archery lessons. Guides here are excellent and adept at tailoring safaris to all levels of experience.

Why we love it

Why we love it

Drinking up the scenery while immersed in your chalet's very own plunge pool, or the well-placed bathtub.
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

All chalets are sublimely perched above a canopy of thicket, but the double-room chalets offer oodles of extra space for couples or families travelling together.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The rooms are encased in glass and perhaps have a more 'hotel' flavour than one might expect on safari.
