About Mumbo Island Camp

An eco-retreat with picture-perfect views over the boulder-strewn tropical waters.

Situated on a rocky outcrop on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Malawi, guests can get away from it all and live off the grid for a few nights in this watery retreat. The lodge is private and quiet, situated on an exclusive island concession within Lake Malawi National Park. Six eco-friendly thatch bungalows are perched over the freshwater paradise. Enjoy freshly prepared meals, the breathtaking view from your hammock or getting closer to the myriad of fish who dart about on a snorkelling expedition.

Property details

The property

Just off Mumbo’s main beach you’ll find the lodge building and a family bungalow. Across the bridge on the islet called Jumbo, are the five other guest tents. The dining area and bar are relaxed spaces under thatch with mesmerising views over the water. Meals are all freshly prepared and come with steaming-fresh bread rolls. All the wooden furniture was made at the lodge’s workshop and the rest of the cane chairs, African curious and soft furnishings were locally sourced.

The rooms

As soon as you enter your chalet of thatch, reed and wood, you’ll feel your shoulders relax. Expect a rustic oasis for you and your partner. The en-suite bungalows are spacious with a bed, mosquito net, side tables, small open cupboard and grass mats. Experience a solar-heated bucket shower and expect an eco-friendly loo. The shaded wooden deck has two cane chairs and a hammock overlooking the tropical paradise.

Activities

You'll soon fall into the routine of just swimming and gazing out at the lake from your hammock. Before then, do head along the fantastic walking trails across the forested island. You can work off your breakfast with a kayak or go snorkelling to find out who you share this corner of Lake Malawi with. The lodge is PADI registered if you’re up for a scuba dive, it’s not included in the price so enquire before you visit.

Something to think about

The camp is a 45-minute boat ride away from the mainland at Cape Maclear, so if you suffer from seasickness or dislike boats, take note!
