A lodge that lives up to its name, Namib Outpost lies in a remote location at Sossusvlei, in the southern Namib. If peace and natural splendour are your thing, and if you love sand dunes, then this is the place to come – Sossuvlei's large salt and clay pan is surrounded by some of the highest dunes in the world. The views are spectacular, especially at sunset, when the sand is rosy and you can hear geckos barking and hyaenas calling. Recently renovated, the lodge's atmosphere is relaxed, the accommodation is great and you can explore the desert on horseback.

The communal area is attractively set up, with a bar, dining area (the food is enjoyable, plentiful and served with a smile), lounge and free wi-fi. Outside is a swimming pool with a sundeck and shaded areas. The views are vast wherever you are.
There are 12 cabins, all beautifully decorated with private shaded sundecks, aircon (temperatures can reach upwards of 40 degrees Celsius during the day), mosquito nets, en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, a refrigerator and access to a small roof terrace for sleeping outdoors. The views are wonderful, even from the loo, which faces a large window overlooking the desert. (Your privacy is ensured!) For real solitude, opt for the Superior Unit, which stands apart from the others.
Sossusvlei and its giant dunes are a great destination year round. Explore the area on foot, in a safari vehicle or on horseback (for both experienced and novice riders). If you're staying for a few days, book a guided hiking trail between Namib Outpost (with two overnight stays). See oryx, springbok, zebra, ostrich and, with a bit of luck, cheetah or even a leopard. Or simply relax at the pool and take in the views.
Sleeping on the roof of your cabin with the stars filling the sky above you.
Getting a bird's-eye view of the desert and its animals from a hot air balloon. Definitely worth the 4:30 am start!
If you’re staying during the high season, book a room with a higher number – you'll be away from the sounds of the lodge itself.
