Broad, elevated decks, open-sided but sheltered by stretched canvas, give the main area a pleasant sense of the flow between indoors and out. The interiors are impeccable. Expect contemporary style, natural materials, loads of comfort and splashes of vivid colour, and an intriguing sense of both cosiness and space. There's a large canvas dining room and lounge. Outside, cushioned seating beneath broad umbrellas beg you to settle back and relax. Beyond, on a gentle rise, lies the pool.
Each of the 24 tents sits upon 50 square metres of elevated wooden decking, all facing east. All offer unobstructed views across the valley and comfortable outdoor sitting areas – it's not uncommon for a nyala or giraffe to saunter past. Each room sleeps just two guests in king-sized beds, which can be made into two doubles (no single beds can be added). Tents have all the necessities, from en-suite bathrooms with a shower to a ceiling fan and minibar.
A network of trails surrounding the lodge are great for running, mountain-biking, hiking and birdwatching (216 species have been recorded). It's a short drive to Kruger Park's Numbi Gate, and the productive southern section of the park. Expect Big Five, plains game, wild dog and bucket-list birds. Further northwest, running parallel to Kruger, the geographically dramatic Panoramic Route (including the extraordinary Blyde River Canyon) is worth exploring. Outside activities are arranged through private operators; ask for help at reception.
A springboard into the Kruger, this charming town is a slice of the olden days within reach of immense wilderness.
