About Ngorongoro Crater Camp, an A&K Sanctuary

A camp entirely hand-crafted on a hillside with the Serengeti spread out below.

A&K Sanctuary relocated and completely rebuilt its long-running camp, moving it onto an elevated hillside within the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area and trading forest cover for sweeping views across the Serengeti plains, some 25 minutes from the crater descent road. The 10 tented suites are fresh with polished hardwood floors and a private deck. Interiors are almost entirely Tanzanian-made, down to the three-metre chandelier strung from painted jacaranda seed pods. Think of it as a showcase of East African craft with a caldera on the doorstep.

Property details

The property

The communal tents were designed with East African studio JPN Interior Design, in a palette of charcoal, warm browns and muted sage. Curved forms borrow from the crater's own contours and from Maasai design traditions. Locally cut Tanga stone runs through the spaces, and handwoven sisal screens, made on site by Tanzanian artisans, divide them. The showstopper is a three-metre chandelier of painted jacaranda seed pods hanging over the lounge.

The rooms

All 10 tented suites come with polished hardwood floors, a muslin-draped king-size bed and a spacious ensuite bathroom. Glass doors slide open onto a private deck, angled to catch the Serengeti view rather than each other. Furniture was handcrafted in Arusha workshops and dressed with pieces from Women Craft, the basket-weaving collective that supports more than 600 Tanzanian artisans. Existing furniture from the camp was restored rather than binned, which we rather love.

Activities

Game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater remain the main event: early or late in the day, in a closed 4x4, amid wildebeest, buffalo, hyena and, if you're fortunate, black rhino. But the new setting means you're just as well placed for the Great Migration's calving grounds at Ndutu (seasonal), the ancient rock art at Nasera, the moving dune known as the Shifting Sands, or Olduvai Gorge Museum, built where some of humanity's oldest fossils turned up. A Maasai village visit rounds things off nicely.

Why we love it

Why we love it

That chandelier: three metres of painted jacaranda seed pods hanging over the lounge, unlike anything else on the Tanzanian safari circuit (we've looked).

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Ask your guide to route a day via Nasera's rock art or the Shifting Sands rather than straight back to the crater; the camp's new hillside spot makes both an easy detour.

Something to think about

Something to think about

Since it's relocation, the view has changed somewhat so expect Serengeti vistas over the crater rim.
