Property details

The property

The central areas of Sand River Selous Lodge, are spacious and comfortable, overlooking the flowing waters of the river. Built with thatched roofs, round stones and cement the walls are whitewashed in sections and stone bare in others. The dining room has mix of private tables and a larger communal table depending on preference. The interleading sitting area is filled with squishy, upholstered furniture, African carvings and natural wood from fallen trees, creating a relaxed and homely space. There is also a scattering of books, as well as a curio shop. Outside there is a viewing deck with cushioned hardwood chairs and a swimming pool close at hand surrounded by recliner chairs for the midday heat.

The rooms

There are just eight rooms in the lodge, five standard rooms and 3 suites. Built in the same style as the main lodge, the open-air viewpoints produce a feeling of bush emersion, rather than a barrier from the bush. Both accommodations come with plenty of privacy, writing desks, shelving and double or twin beds with crisp bedding and mosquito nets. The en-suite bathrooms have showers and sinks with hot running water. The suites are larger with the added benefit of a private plunge pool.

Activities

Known for its high quality of guiding, don't miss out on any of the many activities offered at Sand River Selous Lodge. Game drive is the core activity, taking your explorations to areas further afield, in search of those speciality species like the wild dogs. Walking Safari is an intimate and intense means of discovery, encountering wildlife of all shapes and sizes. Ideally combine walking safari and a night of fly-camping in the wilds. Boating provides the opportunity to explore the winding Rufiji River and Stiegler’s Gorge. There is also the option of a little fishing and the relaxing hot springs of Tagalala. Should you just want to soak in the atmosphere the camps swimming pool provides the ideal setting for a cold beverage and a book.

Something to think about

The camp is in quite a remote part of the Nyerere National Park and the access roads are long and bumpy. Be prepared for a massage, African-style on your drive in!
