Enter the thatch roof Bush Suite through a one-of-a-kind doorway that pays homage to African basket weaving. The suite's architecture is mesmerizing, central to it is the grand, open-plan living area with a stylish sunken lunge, fire place and coffee tables carved from tree trunks. The decor has a distinctly African flavor with modern geometric touches. Leather sofas are plush, offering generous seating. Enjoy meals in the indoor or outdoor dining areas. Outside you'll also find a log-burning fire with views across the plains and a 13m swimming pool, shaped like a mokoro.
Two double rooms are situated on either side of the lounge. They boast large beds and are fully-equipped with ensuite bathrooms offering a double basin, indoor and outdoor showers, a bidet and a deep bathtub, each with views over the reserve. They have air-conditioning and wi-fi and smart flaps that can be rolled up for a greater sense being outdoors. Each has two large glass paneled windows with 180 degree views. One of the beds can be wheeled outside for a night beneath the stars.
The main draw to Okonjima is the rare chance to get up close to large African carnivores. Use radio-tracking to follow cheetah, wild dog and hyena on foot and leopard in a vehicle. Guides here do an especially great job of getting you involved in the chase, as well as explaining all you need to know about conserving African carnivores. Visit the informative AfriCat centre for a thorough education on their work. One of the benefits of this relatively tame reserve is the chance to get out on foot on your own - enjoy the solitude of the 8km self-guided walking trail.
