About Oliver's Restaurant and Lodge

Play a little golf, see Kruger's Big Five, and sleep in continental luxury
Keen golfers and bush-lovers will be in seventh-heaven on this gorgeous country estate, just a stone's throw from Kruger National Park. The sprawling grounds surrounding Oliver's Lodge are home to an 18-hole golf course, and ample tracts of planted forest. The lodge itself is impressively large, with a touch of modern alpine-chalet style in its staggered roof peaks and carved wooden cornices (the owners are Austrian). Guests here will want for nothing – from the elegant restaurant to the on-site spa, there are many ways to relax, and stay that way.

Property details

The property

The elegant facades of Oliver's Lodge rise above carefully tended gardens, with winding brick paths, sheltered patios, pools and ponds. You'll get a sense of the interior country lodge style from the moment you enter. The decor is classic, with fine textiles and good artworks from near and far. Lovely arched balconies, both private and shared, overlook the grounds and the horizon, and the restaurant, which allows for indoor and outdoor seating, is open to both lodge guests and visitors.

The rooms

Various accommodation options range from standard and luxury rooms and suites to a family cottage and a luxury family house with four bedrooms. It would be hard to find fault with any of the rooms, as they're all rather lovely. The beds are king-sized (or two twins, should you prefer), the bathrooms have separate walk-in showers and deep bathtubs, and private patios or balconies overlook the golf course. Wi-fi, air-conditioning, a mini-bar and satellite TV are standard.

Activities

This special slice of South Africa is much loved for its subtropical climate and dynamic countryside, which combines deep canyons with postcard views and a wildlife-filled Lowveld. Nearby Kruger National Park is home to all of the Big Five, but also wilderness that looks and feels – and is – truly wild. The town of White River offers a good mix of culture, history and activities for the city-inclined. Golfers will relish their easy access to the greens.

The dining is among the Kruger's best and you could book an indulgent evening of fondue or Swiss raclette in the wine cellar.

Something to think about

Game drives into the Kruger may be at the top of your list, but there's plenty of opportunity to explore the Blyde River Canyon if you have the time.
