Yes, everything is under canvas, but the comparison with camping ends there. In the palatial open-plan lounge/dining area, invitingly long sofas create separate seating areas – perfect for lounging between game drives, cappuccino and a good book in hand. The dining is fine at the large, convivial table. Outside, the open deck has more seating, plus smaller tables for meals. Extras? Three fire pits, an outdoor projector showing old movies at night, a two-level heated infinity pool with jacuzzi, star-gazing deck and wi-fi.
The 12 double rooms and one family room are spaced generously apart , each with a different perspective across the open plains. Rooms are tented, with en-suite bathrooms and sliding glass doors that lend a distinctly permanent feel to these structures. You'll find wooden flooring throughout, an emperor-sized bed, a free-standing fireplace, rainforest shower and deep, hand-hammered copper bathtub. Other luxuries include a superbly stocked minibar and an outdoor shower. Family rooms sleep four and have two en-suite bathrooms.
The Serengeti offers great wildlife viewing all year. Of course there's the herbivore migration – typically at its peak in June–July. But, apart from migrating zebra, wildebeest and gazelle, you may well see all the Big Five and a host of other favourites. The guides' in-depth knowledge of the terrain and inhabitants is thrilling – they know far more than simply tracking game. And with only four passengers per vehicle, you can gaze, listen and photograph to your heart's content.
