About Orchid Classic Cruise

Indochine elegance on the water, exploring Halong Bay and its quieter, wilder siblings.

Vietnam's Halong Bay needs little introduction – those ethereal limestone karsts rising from emerald waters have graced a thousand bucket lists. But here's the thing: the crowds have caught on. Enter Orchid Classic, a refined wooden vessel that pioneered a different path when it launched in 2016, becoming the first luxury cruise to venture into the less-traversed waters of Lan Ha Bay. With a maximum of 28 guests, this is intimate cruising done well – think burnished wood interiors, sea-view bathtubs, and a 500-square-metre sundeck for watching the karsts drift by. The crew are famously warm, cooking classes are a hit, and kayaking through hidden lagoons is the stuff memories are made of.

Property details

The property

The Orchid Classic channels old Indochina with its all-wooden interiors – polished floors, warming panels, and monochrome photography lending an air of nostalgic elegance. The restaurant serves full-board Vietnamese and international cuisine with artful presentation, and the happy hour before dinner is a sociable affair. Up top, the expansive sundeck is the place to be: sunbeds and parasols by day, a jacuzzi with karst views at sunset, and Tai Chi at dawn for the early risers. There's also a small spa, a gym (rare for Halong cruises), and a well-stocked bar for those evenings when squid fishing loses its appeal.

The rooms

All 14 cabins come with private balconies and bathtubs – a proper rarity in these parts. The standard Suite Balcony cabins span 36 square metres with burnished wood décor, crisp white linens, and views that stretch from your pillow to the passing islands. Premium Suites sit higher on the second deck for better vistas, while the two Orchid Exclusive Suites are rather special: 45 square metres of romantic indulgence complete with a signature circular king bed, jacuzzi bathtub, and orchid-themed murals. For families, connecting doors can create spacious 72-square-metre arrangements.

Activities

Days unfold at your own pace on the Orchid. Kayak through the Dark and Bright Cave – a narrow limestone arch opening into a secret lagoon – or swim off Ba Trai Dao beach when the weather obliges. The cooking demonstrations (spring rolls are a crowd favourite) are engaging rather than gimmicky, and the sundeck jacuzzi makes a fine alternative to joining the group. On the three-day itinerary, things get more adventurous: cycle through Cat Ba National Park to the tiny fishing village of Viet Hai, explore the stalactite-filled Trung Trang Cave.

Why we love it

Why we love it

Gliding through Lan Ha Bay while the mega-cruises jostle for space elsewhere. The scenery is made all the more beautiful it.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Spring for the three-day itinerary if you can. The cycling through Cat Ba National Park to Viet Hai village adds a layer of adventure (and context) that the shorter trip simply can't match.

Something to think about

Something to think about

Due to this being a high end luxury cruise, drinks are on the more expensive side – just something to keep in mind.
