Bird-filled lagoons between the ancient Namib Desert and the crisp Atlantic.

Namibia's harsh, gravel-covered landscapes have attracted intrepid travellers for decades. From the towering, rust-coloured dunes of Sossusvlei across endless desert plains to the windswept, sea lion-studded beaches of the Skeleton Coast, from the pastel-tinted mountain ranges to the deep rock canyons, it's a country unlike any other. Clinging to its western Atlantic edge is the relaxed port of Walvis Bay, with a lagoon that's been declared a RAMSAR coastal wetland. Oyster Box Guesthouse lies on the lagoon's edge – a warm and comfortable place to lay your weary head and gaze at large flocks of flamingo and pelican.

Property details

The property

With flowing spaces and tastefully minimal nautical decor, this intimate guesthouse is both warm and spacious. The dining room, where breakfast is served buffet-style, is sunny and has great bay views. The ground floor opens out to a neat lawn where you can sit and enjoy a coffee or a cocktail on a cushioned love seat. The bar is well stocked, and has plenty of stools – perfect for chatting with other travellers over a snack and a drink.

The rooms

Twelve rooms set across two storeys offer comfortable and quietly chic accommodation, with plenty of natural light. The rooms are all equipped with air-con, wi-fi, satellite TV and en-suite bathrooms. Those on the ground floor have doors leading out to the lawn, while rooms on the upper level open on to a shared balcony and those magnificent Atlantic views. Three rooms are slightly larger, which is great news if you're travelling with kids and need an extra bed.

Activities

Walvis Bay may be regarded as a stopover point for travellers to Namibia's north coast, but the town itself has its own attractions. Decent restaurants and pubs serve up very good seafood and Namibia's much sought-after game meat. To the south, Sandwich Harbour has a lagoon, salt pans, a bird sanctuary, and red dunes that roll to the sea; to the north is the seaside resort Swakopmund. Visit nearby Pelican Point to see huge colonies of seals and seabirds.
