At Pafuri, classic safari meets modern quirkiness in a beautiful blend of canvas tents and thatched rooftops, pastel pillows and cushy sofas, black and white photos and vibrant art. Outside, there's a large swimming pool, surrounded by loungers, as well as trendy bucket stools that can be moved anywhere for the best view. The funky, shabeen-inspired bar looks especially enticing at night when it's aglow with lanterns and next door, the restaurant-style dining room with large booth seats is just as lovely. The best after-hours camp atmosphere, however, must be on the campfire deck that extends just above the river.
The 19 tents are strung out along a kilometre-long boardwalk, each with views of the river from the enormous verandas (complete with an extra table and chairs for private dining too). Seven of the tents can accommodate four people - ideal for families or couples traveling together - and the other seven offer a combination of double bed and king size bed configurations for the best night's sleep you've had in a while. The decor is subtle and smart and the lime green accessories keep things exciting!
This camp is exceptionally located for action-packed, Big Five game drives and you'll have the chance to go on two a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Besides game drives, the guided game walks should be a high priority; on them, your exceptional guide will bring to life the lesser-known, less frequently seen intricacies of the bush. Bird lovers will be in paradise, with nearly half of all South Africa's bird species found in the area - come and catch a glimpse of the evasive Pels fishing owl or the radiant Narina trogan.
Pafuri Tented Camp is owned by Return Africa which collaborates with the Makuleke people to promote ecotourism and conservation. They develop skills leading to employment in these sectors, establish links with local suppliers, and assist communities in gaining control of conservation land. Their efforts include setting up community-owned lodges, advocating responsible business practices, and documenting project lessons for industry-wide impact. The African Safari Foundation's mission aligns with rural development, emphasising community ownership, skills training, and equitable distribution of tourism benefits, particularly empowering women for sustainable change. A contribution of $30 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
A remote, little-visited enclave of the enormous Kruger National Park with a spectacular array of birdlife.
