The Pafuri Trails Camp is located on the banks of Luvuvhu River in one of the wildest parts of the concession. The camp is all about getting you up close and personal to untamed Africa and although the facilities are simple, it’s the perfect setting for an intimate bush experience. Expect comfy, cushion-strewn sofas shaded by enormous tree branches, an open-air fire pit and a dinner table and mess tent under canvas. Meals are hearty, the bar is well-stocked and it’s the perfect place to return to at the end of a long day of exploring.
Rather like the main area, the traditional safari tents are simple yet comfortable and suit the environment down to a tee. All tents have large, mesh windows and a zip-up door, as well as ensuite bathrooms with bucket showers. At the front, a couple of camp chairs sit on the veranda. There is no electricity in the camp, so tents are lit with kerosene lanterns, their hiss and sparkle adding to the rustic atmosphere. Twin beds are soft and cosy and fluffy blankets ward off the chilly winter nights.
Walking trails are the name of the game here, allowing you to investigate the "inaccessible" parts of Kruger. Typically, you'll undertake two, 3- to 4-hour walks daily, with a long break for lunch and a siesta. The guides will point out the smaller aspects of the bush – flora, tracks and small animals, although you're quite likely to see big game (elephants, buffalo, even lions) too. And with over 350 recorded species, treasured bird sightings are pretty much guaranteed. Our advice? Pack lightly, and wear worn-in hiking boots!
Pafuri Walking Trails is owned by Return Africa which collaborates with the Makuleke people to promote ecotourism and conservation. They develop skills leading to employment in these sectors, establish links with local suppliers, and assist communities in gaining control of conservation land. Their efforts include setting up community-owned lodges, advocating responsible business practices, and documenting project lessons for industry-wide impact. The African Safari Foundation's mission aligns with rural development, emphasising community ownership, skills training, and equitable distribution of tourism benefits, particularly empowering women for sustainable change. A contribution of $30 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
A remote, little-visited enclave of the enormous Kruger National Park with a spectacular array of birdlife.
