With a lobby on the 25th floor of the Shiodome Media Tower, the Park Hotel couldn't be better situated for getting under the skin of Tokyo. Right by a subway station - and only 5 minutes from the Hamamatsucho monorail station - it’s easy to enjoy the full scope of Japan's capital, from the mind-boggling lights of Shinjuku to the serenity of the Hamarikyu Gardens (they're just a 10-minute stroll away). Back at the hotel, prepare to be awed by the incredible artwork: not only does the hotel rotate the art installations in the lobby almost every month, there is an entire floor that has been completely transformed by the work of a Japanese artist.
At the centre of the hotel is a 10-storey atrium, inspired by the gardens that usher you into Japan's art museums, where you can see all the way to Mount Fuji on a clear day. There are several dining options on the 25th floor including the casual ART Lounge, Hanasanshou (expect kaiseki banquets and a choice of 50 types of sake) and The Society bar, which serves an array of cocktails, wines and single-malt scotch. The hotel also offers extensive breakfast options and light bites from the cafes on the ground floor. When it's time for a pamper, head to the THANN Sanctuary for a Thai-style massage.
The majority of the rooms are neat and compact, the standout feature being the wide picture windows with views that range between Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Bay and Hamarikyu Park. The bathrooms are bright and pristine with aromatic amenities. In addition to the standard rooms, there is a single suite with huge, curving windows spanning the living room, a private wine cellar, and a vast King-size bed. On the 31st floor, each room is being turned into a work of art by a contemporary Japanese artist with themes including the Geisha Goldfish, Haiku and a host of other evocative titles.
Get to know Tokyo, from its early beginnings to the modern-day metropolis you see before you. Marvel at the architecture of the Imperial Palace and wander between the city's most famous temples including the beautiful Sensoji, Tokyo's oldest temple; explore Tsukiji, the world's largest fish market; take a lesson in sushi making; browse the high-end stores of Harajuku and Ginza; visit local sake breweries; and meander through the tranquil Kamarikyu Gardens, where you can stop for a cuppa in a tea house in the centre of the lake.
The original artwork that colours the entire hotel, but most of all, the Artist Floor. Vivid, creative and full of life, each room has become the canvas for the artist in charge of decorating it.
The hotel hosts revolving art exhibitions in the atrium, so be sure to take a look when you pass through.
The Park Hotel isn't as conventionally glossy as some of Shiodome's big names, but its character makes it stand out.
