Pel's clean-lined aesthetic is modern and stylish, although everything is done so deftly you hardly take note. The multi-level central structure consists of large decks connected by blonde wood walkways. To one side is the swimming pool, surrounded by cushioned, view-facing loungers. Bench seats surround a sunken fire pit. The open-air lounge makes a great gathering spot, and meals (big thumbs-up!) are at various places throughout the day – perhaps at the elegant long table with corner views, or outdoors.
The four suites on stilts resemble modern bush pods clinging to the cliffside. With gorgeous wooden floors and mechanised blinds in place of walls that retract completely to create a seamless flow from indoors to out (you can smell the vegetation in the breeze), they're simple and splendid. The net-draped king-sized bed faces the view, full-on, and a further two day beds are ideal for children. Bathtubs sit to one side behind a partition, and there's a sensational open-air shower.
This is an area of giant baobabs, Pafuri's vibrant green fever-tree forest, tropical vegetation and elevated views, and a rich history that your guide will be happy to explain. Don't hurry around trying to see everything on your wildlife list; instead, apreciate the area in its entirety. Activities range from game drives, walks and specialised birding excursions to leisurely picnics and champagne breakfasts. And all in your own time. You may see the Big Five; you'll definitely see birds galore.
A remote, little-visited enclave of the enormous Kruger National Park with a spectacular array of birdlife.
