About Pel's Post

Paradise found at this exclusive bush lodge.
Pel's Post hugs the cliff overlooking the Luvuvhu River in northern Kruger and, like its namesake, the Pel's fishing-owl, it's a rare bird. One of just a handful of lodges in the remote, less-visited sector called the Makuleke Contractual Park (also the Pafuri Triangle), Pel's Post is an exclusive-use destination for safari connoisseurs. It may be modern, luxurious, and ecologically sound to the core, but it's dedicated to the bush. Bring your family or close friends (eight in total) to stay in its four chalets, fully staffed, and immerse yourself in the country of wild treats with your private guide.

Property details

The property

Pel's clean-lined aesthetic is modern and stylish, although everything is done so deftly you hardly take note. The multi-level central structure consists of large decks connected by blonde wood walkways. To one side is the swimming pool, surrounded by cushioned, view-facing loungers. Bench seats surround a sunken fire pit. The open-air lounge makes a great gathering spot, and meals (big thumbs-up!) are at various places throughout the day – perhaps at the elegant long table with corner views, or outdoors.

The rooms

The four suites on stilts resemble modern bush pods clinging to the cliffside. With gorgeous wooden floors and mechanised blinds in place of walls that retract completely to create a seamless flow from indoors to out (you can smell the vegetation in the breeze), they're simple and splendid. The net-draped king-sized bed faces the view, full-on, and a further two day beds are ideal for children. Bathtubs sit to one side behind a partition, and there's a sensational open-air shower.

Activities

This is an area of giant baobabs, Pafuri's vibrant green fever-tree forest, tropical vegetation and elevated views, and a rich history that your guide will be happy to explain. Don't hurry around trying to see everything on your wildlife list; instead, apreciate the area in its entirety. Activities range from game drives, walks and specialised birding excursions to leisurely picnics and champagne breakfasts. And all in your own time. You may see the Big Five; you'll definitely see birds galore.

You'll love the mechanical blinds that raise up and disappear to turn every room into an open-air perch.

Insiders Tip

Steal an afternoon away from the lodge and picnic in the fever tree forest at Crook's corner–the point where South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique meet.

Something to think about

The 6 1/2 hour-drive from Joburg is hardly a hardship – cut through stunning landscapes dotted with ancient baobabs. (Though air-transfers are also available).
