Under the gaze of Table Mountain and just a two-minute walk away from the Victoria & Albert Waterfront, the Protea Hotel Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge is truly winning in the location stakes. Originally part of the Breakwater Prison, which was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the lodge has the look of a whitewashed fortress. Happily, its original architecture was carefully preserved and, in the early 2000s, converted into a hotel. With an address as central as this, there's so much on offer in terms of activities, whether you choose to shop til you drop, hit the beach or taste your way through the city's restaurants.

Having maintained much of its original architecture and character, the main hotel looks a little like a sandcastle nestled amidst the city-slick Cape Town streets. Inside, the Stonebreakers Restaurant offers an extensive buffet breakfast (plus delicious a la carte options) and dinners overlooking the shimmering V&A Waterfront. There's also the aptly-named Relax Spa, offering a full and excellent treatment menu. Self-drivers will also be delighted to know there is 24-hour secure parking.
Split between the original building and an additional wing, the double rooms and suites all have large windows (some revealing views of the waterfront), beds draped in white linens, and neat bathrooms. Other amenities include a TV, minibar, tea/coffee facilities and high-speed wifi. The junior suites are more spacious with a king-sized bed and comfortable lounge area, while the hotel also has several two-bedroom options. It's worth noting that the standard rooms are quite compact.
With such a brilliant location, there's no end to the activities here! The Two Oceans Aquarium is just a short walk away, as is the V&A Waterfront and its restaurants, cafes, shops and sights. Get to know South Africa's past with a tour of Robben Island, take a stroll around the stunning Kirstenbosch Gardens or enjoy a day on one of Cape Town's many glorious beaches. A little further afield are the Winelands and the penguins of Boulders Beach - just ask at reception if you would like help organising a day of sightseeing.
The hotel is a short walk away from the iconic V&A Waterfront, and the rest of Cape Town's many delights are within easy reach.
The massages are fantastic, especially after a long flight. If you have the time, pre-book before you arrive and enjoy!
The hotel is actually connected to a college and there can be noise at times. Also, there's no pool.
