About Pumulani Lodge

A clifftop retreat with epic views of the lake and fabulous water activities.
Mother Nature may have given Lake Malawi turquoise sparkling waters, rolling green hills and crescents of powder-white sand, but it was owners Jo & Robin Pope who gave Pumulani an infinity pool, 10 stunning eco-friendly villas and a host of water based activities to keep you busy. Find this chic retreat at the top of a winding track in the forested hills of the Nankumba Peninsula on the southern shore of Lake Malawi and visit for a spot of post-safari indulgence, interspersed with a little snorkelling or kayaking should it take your fancy.

Property details

The property

Spread out over 2 levels and the beach, the main lodge is spacious, airy and romantic and, of course, makes the most of the heavenly views over the Lake and beyond. At the top is a decking area where breakfast and dinner are served and a small bar. Step down to the infinity pool and a smattering of sun loungers and then down again to the beach, where you’ll find another bar for post-watersports refreshments and a shady lunch spot.

The rooms

Just 10 luxurious villas (including a swanky honeymoon suite and family villa) are dotted around the hillside, connected by a series of walkways. Décor is soothing and subtle so as not to distract from the jaw-dropping vistas. All have wonderful private decks, separate sitting rooms and vast bathrooms with romantic roll-top baths. Some villas are nearer the beach which can be quite a hike – we’re pretty partial to room 5 which has the best of both worlds.

Activities

Most activities at Pumulani are included in the price apart from scuba diving and motorised sports. If you pick only one activity, we highly recommend taking the speedboat to Cape Maclear and snorkelling among the Cichlid in possibly the clearest, bluest water we have ever seen. Also on offer are kayaking, waterskiing, sailing, and fishing trips and a variety of lovely nature and wildlife walks (or bike rides) around the surrounding areas and nearby villages.

Insiders Tip

Most people think of dhows and romantic sunsets, but how about sailing out with the sunrise and stopping for breakfast on a deserted beach?
Something to think about

Something to think about

Owing to its hilltop position, there are more than a few steps and inclines around the lodge and on the way to the rooms.
