Limpopo Province in South Africa’s northern interior is a superb safari destination, and one of its best-kept secrets is the malaria-free Waterberg region. This magical piece of paradise rises up from the lowlands in a series of breathtaking escarpments, with clear mountain streams carving through dramatic gorges and rock formations, and a staggering diversity of wildlife. Ravineside Lodge lies within the Entabeni Game Reserve, some 22000 hectares of pristine Waterberg wilderness, and offers comfortable rustic chalet-style accommodation in an astoundingly beautiful setting, with a great choice of game viewing and adventure activities.

The property

Ravineside Lodge is aptly named – it clings to the upper slopes of a steep gorge that falls away to the valley below – and the views are simply stunning. Elevated wooden walkways link the guest lodges to the main area, with its rustic African-style bush bar and dining room, and an outdoor boma beside a swimming pool in a clearing down below. The restaurant serves simple and very tasty bush cuisine, and the overall atmosphere is delightfully laid back.

The rooms

Guests stay in 22 thatched timber lodges on stilts, each with three or four en-suite bedrooms and an open-plan living area facing out to a private deck. The wooden interiors are cosy, with a rustic African theme and all the facilities you need. And of course there are those views – because of the sloping site, the climb between the main area and the lodges can be steep. However, the vistas along the way make the effort worthwhile.

Activities

Look forward to a range of fun activities while you’re here. Aside from daily game drives and guided bush walks, there’s also the opportunity to explore the reserve on horseback. Boat cruises offer a tranquil way to soak up the glorious surroundings, with excellent birdwatching. Abseiling and quad biking are offered in certain parts of the reserve. At night, enjoy some spectacular stargazing in the Astro Boma with an expert guide.
