About Roam Explorers Camp

Close your tent flaps and nod off to the sounds of silence, Karoo style
Roam Private Game Reserve may be just six hours from Cape Town, but the difference between the city and the arid plains could not be greater. The reserve is in true Karoo countryside, dominated by flat-topped koppies (hills), undulating rocky plains and the shadowy Swartberg mountains. Roam Explorer Camp is the simplest of the trio of accommodation options here. Tucked away on a dry riverbed, the camp has just five domed tents raised on platforms. The guides and hosts will happily share their substantial knowledge of the terrain and, in the evenings, you'll gather around the campfire beneath the stars.

Property details

The property

Set on a dry riverbed under a few acacia trees, the main area is a simple arrangement of two canvas awnings that shelter the dining table and the buffet area. The only other feature is an open-air fireplace with a few canvas chairs. The real luxury comes in the personal attention from two staff members, who ensure the camp is immaculate and your every need is accounted for. This exclusive-use camp is perfect for groups of up to 10 guests.

The rooms

Five simple canvas dome tents, each sleeping two, have comfortable twin stretcher beds dressed with good linens, and paraffin lanterns to provide soft light. Each tent sits on its own wooden deck complete with two comfy camping chairs. There are two separate bathrooms with flush toilets, basins and bucket showers that are filled with water heated on demand by thestaff. If you're a happy camper, this charming camp won't disappoint.

Activities

There's a surprising diversity on these rocky plains, from the world's highest number of endemic succulents to the variety of creatures eking out an existence. Take a guided game drive or hike to explore the wilderness, keeping an eye out for jackal, caracal, bat-eared and Cape foxes, springbok, meerkat, giraffe, buffalo and cheetah. For birdlovers, there are 240 species to log. Explore the four mountain-bike trails at your leisure (bring your own bike). And there are rich pickings for stargazers.
