Rosenhof Country House

The mid-19th century homestead has been beautifully renovated, showing off its yellowwood beams and ceilings, tasteful antique furniture, and artworks by some of South Africa's most famous artists. Breakfasts are served overlooking the garden, with a chorus of chirping birds the soundtrack, and butterflies fluttering between the flowers. Meals at Rosenhof are elegant affairs, with beautifully laid tables and hearty yet refined country cuisine – ostrich fillet is a must! The pool sparkles, and there's a spa for pampering.

All 14 rooms (of which two are suites) are thoughtfully designed, with tranquil decor in calm colours, and generous space providing plenty of room for wheelchairs or prams – so bring the entire family. The two executive suites set a short distance from the main house are private and perfect for couples and honeymooners, with their own pools and extra comforts. The owners have catered for all visitors' needs.

Drag yourself away from Rosenhof's comforts to investigate the sights. A stone's throw away is the Cango Wildlife Ranch, home to red river hog, pygmy hippo and lemur species. Or head to the Cango Caves, which are quite breathtaking. En route, you're bound to spot hundreds of ostriches on the road-hugging farms. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world, so visit a farm to see the biggest of all birds and perhaps treat yourself to beautifully made mementoes.
