Royal Chundu Island Lodge

Considering that Island Lodge accommodates a maximum of eight guests, the main area is huge. A high thatched roof covers two lounges, divided by a common fireplace and splashed with colour. There's also an outdoor seating area on a wide wooden deck overlooking the river. The infinity pool, on the edge of the deck, gives the impression that you're bathing in the river. Dining happens almost anywhere you like, but mostly under the stars or beneath the ancient jackalberry trees.

Four impressive villas tucked in the ancient trees face the river. Sleeping just eight in total, they're well equipped, with warm wooden floors complemented by crisp blue and white linens. Each villa has an extra-length king-sized bed, a small lounge area, dressing room and writing desk. A spacious en-suite bathroom has a glass-walled double shower (for romantics) and twin basins, while the private deck has a large open-air bathtub. Aircon? Yes, and wi-fi and a minibar.

Island Lodge's activities are similar to those available at River Lodge, with the added bonus of being able to explore the island on foot. Sunset cruises, canoeing, fishing and stargazing are available in-house. If you want to get off the island, arrange guided walks or a game drive, or visit the local village. The lodge will arrange helicopter and microlight flights, white-water rafting downstream, interactive elephant experiences, horse riding or golf. Alternatively, just kick back and submit to inertia.
