About Rufiji River Camp

Unpretentious riverfront camp in Tanzania's diverse Nyerere National Park
Though lesser-known, Nyerere National Park in eastern Tanzania is one of the largest game reserves in the world. Indeed, it is as beautiful as it is important, protecting the country's coastal plateau region. Rufiji River Camp offers a waterfront setting and down-to-earth vibe; a welcome alternative to pricier safari options across the country. Expect varied game, especially during the dry season, though lower densities than regions like Tanzania's Serengeti. The Reserve is open from June through February. Note that while Rufiji falls within an area dedicated exclusively to photographic safaris, hunting is permitted on other sections of the Reserve.

Property details

The property

The camp's central area boasts fabulous panoramas over the river, where hippos, crocodiles and a myriad of birdlife converge. High, thatched roofs, stone floors and open sides allow for ample air-flow, and the atmosphere is down-to-earth and comfortable, with well-placed furnishings throughout. Escape from the lounge, library, bar and dining area, to the upper deck: a lovely hideaway spot to sit with a book or a pair of binoculars and enjoying the sweeping views. Outside is a campfire and a shaded swimming pool with umbrellas and loungers.

The rooms

Rooms are fairly basic, but comfortable. There are 14 chalets in total, three of which are family tents (each sleeping four). Dotted along a forest pathway with monkeys and birds as neighbours, tents are well-spaced and private. Each has its own furnished deck with views over the river, an en-suite bathroom with hot shower and flush toilet, and twin or double bed configurations. Family tents have the bonus of a private plunge pool to keep the kids cool and happy.

Activities

Game drives and boat trips are Rufiji's specialty, and walking safaris offer a great change of pace. Drives typically traverse the edge of three nearby lakes and can include a full-day safari with a lovely lakeside picnic over lunch. Rates include two drives a day, with reasonably rigid departure and return times to bear in mind. Although the Reserve has less traffic than most others, there are still several lodges in the area, so don't expect sightings all to yourself.
