The cabins are built from huge cedar logs, with insulation provided by the moss that grows between them. The larger of the cabins has a lounge and dining room with an open fire and a fully equipped kitchen. Rutundu is a self-catering lodge, so you'll need to bring all food and drinks with you. Facilities are basic, but include a gas oven and stove, and outdoor fridge. There is no electricity – all lighting is provided by solar lamps.
Two separate log cabins overlook the lake, offering very rustic yet comfortable accommodation. The larger of the two has a huge bedroom with a double bed, bunk bed and en-suite bathroom, in addition to the main living area. The smaller cabin is a short distance away, and has a double bed, two singles, and an en-suite bathroom. All bedding and towels are supplied and the vibe is very much one of country-style simplicity and getting back to basics.
The range of outdoor activities include nature walks, mountain hikes, birdwatching (even sunbirds at your breakfast table!), and trout fishing in Lake Rutundu. There's a small boat if you fancy exploring the lake, with staff available should you require a guide. For enthusiastic hikers, Lake Alice is a strenuous two hours away, with less challenging walks around Lake Rutundu and the surrounding mountainside. It is possible to arrive at the cabins on horseback, a four-hour trip for experienced riders only.
