About Ruwesi Canoe Trails

Get a magical perspective on the wilderness on a Zambezi canoe safari
Fancy a wilderness thrill of a lifetime? Paddling the Zambezi in a custom-built kayak, stopping to explore the floodplains on foot or on a game drive, and experiencing the rugged wilderness of Mana Pools National Park – that's pure adventure. No paddling skills are necessary, just be prepared for close-up wildlife encounters with huge numbers of elephant, a healthy predator population, and vast pods of hippo in the river. At the end of each day a fly camp awaits, with comfortable tents, ice-cold sundowners and a hearty fireside dinner beneath the stars. Tours run between April and November.

Property details

The property

Nights are spent in rustic fly camps set up in a fabulous setting on the Zambezi floodplains. Here, the focus is on getting together to enjoy a drink around a crackling fire, listening to the sounds of the untouched wilderness – lions roaring, hyenas squabbling over a carcass, and the contented honking of hippos in the river. Tuck into a hearty bush dinner under the stars while your guide prepares you for the next leg of the journey.

The rooms

Your home each night is a comfortable walk-in dome tent that’s fully equipped with the necessities for a good night’s sleep – proper twin beds, cosy duvets and quality linens, and an en-suite bush bathroom with a flushing toilet and bucket shower. Water is heated on the fire and brought to you for a blissful shower at the end of each day. Once the sun has set, keep your wits about you as wildlife often passes quite close to camp.

Activities

Canoeing is the main focus. Before you take to the water, your guides will give a full safety briefing and let you know what to expect. The trail (minimum three nights) begins with an easy paddle, drifting downstream and getting a feel for the river. Bush walks on the floodplains, and a game drive into the rugged interior of Mana Pools, home to lion, leopard, elephant and a variety of plains game, make this one of our favourite safari experiences.
