About Sanbona Explorer Camp

Spend a weekend among the Big Five – near Cape Town
At 54,000 hectares, Sanbona is one of South Africa's largest privately-owned game reserves, and there's certainly a lot of see, from mammals and birds to reptiles and insects, all set against wild and stark scenery and unique vegetation. If you prefer exploring new territory on foot, you'll love Sanbona Explorer Camp. Located on the shaded bank of a riverbed in the north-eastern sector of the reserve, a 30 minute-drive from Dwyka Tented Lodge, the camp offers a close-to-nature experience, with intriguing walking safaris and tranquil nights spent in comfortable tents arranged around a campfire.

Property details

The property

The tents are set around a central campfire, where all the meals are prepared and served. You can linger here long into the night, listening to stories and admiring the uninterrupted sky. The food is good and plentiful, the trackers and guides are helpful and charming, and the atmosphere is calm and silent, Karoo-style.

The rooms

Three canvas tents, sleeping two each, are arranged around the fire. All are furnished with two fold-out camp beds with down sleeping bags, en-suite bio box toilets, an exterior basin, LED light and a hammock beneath the trees. The guests share two showers, with water warmed by the sun or over the fire. Bring warm clothes for chilly evenings.

Activities

Bookings are scheduled from Friday to Sunday. Foot safaris are the main attraction, although there is a game-viewing vehicle at the camp. On the day of your arrival, an afternoon walk is offered, followed by drinks, dinner and a fireside evening. Day two starts early, with a four-hour round-trip followed by brunch and some time to chill, perhaps in your hammock. When it's cooler, head off on another bush walk. Celebrate your last day with breakfast in the bush.
