Three Meru-style tents comprise the small, no-frills main area of Sanctuary – a bar, dining tent and lounge. Although simple structures, the tents are luxuriously decorated with billowing fabric ceilings and white table linens. There are comfortable sofas and ottomans, some choice photographs and a few space heaters for chilly evenings. Outdoors is a brightly cushioned seating area with cosy blankets, and meals are served under cover or at private tables scattered at various viewpoints. The food? Delicious and plentiful.
This camp is perfect for that classic, pared-down safari experience. The 12 double tents are set on a slightly elevated area that allows for better views over the dense bush. All are basic but stocked with everything you need and more. You'll find plush mattresses, crisp linens, good lighting, a copper washing basin with running water, bucket shower and toilet. Outside, beneath the canvas overhang, are director chairs and a vanity basin. Thoughtfully, the tents are heated before bedtime.
Morning and afternoon drives are the best, indeed the only, way to view the dizzying range of wildlife in the crater – and the throngs of other safari vehicles. Nevertheless, it's not unusual to see huge clusters of plains game and their attendant predators on a single drive, including elephant, buffalo, black rhino, lion, hyena, leopard, zebra, wildebeest. Trust your professional guide to get you to the best spots. Then visit a local Maasai village for some genuine cultural enlightenment.
