Tucked into riverine forest on the banks of the Mara River, this owner-run seasonal camp delivers one of Kenya's most authentic safari experiences. With just eight tents hidden amongst the trees in the famed Musiara Marsh area (yes, the location where BBC's Big Cat Diaries was filmed), you're guaranteed big cat sightings and a properly intimate atmosphere. Owners Peter and Wendy Twycross have crafted something refreshingly personal here - think campaign furniture that channels old-school safari romance, silverware-and-linen breakfasts perched above the river, and silver-rated Maasai guides who'll tailor each day to your whims. The hippos provide nightly entertainment from the water below.

Canvas dining and lounge tents sit elevated above the Mara River, furnished with vintage touches - think copper elephants, antique chess sets and old phonographs alongside contemporary comfort. Meals are plated rather than buffet-style, served wherever takes your fancy: candlelit dinners under canvas, champagne breakfasts on the riverbank with proper china, or sundowners on the plains. The campfire becomes the evening's focal point as darkness falls and those hippo grunts intensify. There's Wi-Fi in the main areas (surprisingly reliable for such a remote spot) and the all-inclusive rate genuinely means all-inclusive - quality South African wines, spirits and snacks throughout your stay.
Strung along the river through the forest, each tent occupies its own private slice of wilderness with views straight down to the water and its resident hippos. Inside, wrought-iron four-poster beds draped with mosquito nets sit atop woven rugs, whilst mahogany and brass campaign furniture - writing desks, canvas wardrobes, wooden chests - channels the romance of early safari explorers. En-suite bathrooms feel surprisingly spacious with proper flush toilets and hot showers on demand (genuinely hot, with decent pressure). Canvas walls separate the bathroom and shower areas, whilst your private veranda comes with safari chairs for wildlife watching. Two family tents add small adjoining rooms with bunk beds for younger children.
The excellent standard of guiding will have guests gripped and entertained whether on a game drive or a 1 hour walk in the region of the camp. Our bespoke approach ensures the daily agenda of each group of visitors is tailor made and flexible taking their personal preferences into account The seasonal aspect of the camp with no permanent structures offers guests an experience of being authentically close to nature and its location in the less visited Musiara Marsh area of the Reserve ensures excellent game viewing. We are fortunate to have 4 different ecozones on our doorstep, with both the BBC’s Big Cat Dairies and Disney’s African Cats being filmed here. In keeping with our environmental values the camp has minimum impact on the environment.
The personalised service feels genuine rather than rehearsed. Your guide stays with you throughout, learning what excites you most and adjusting accordingly.
Chef Joshua's reputation precedes him and reviewers can't quite work out how he conjures restaurant-quality cuisine from a tented kitchen. Request a bush breakfast by the river for the full experience.
As a seasonal camp (closed during May's long rains), there are no permanent structures here, expectations should match the intentionally minimal footprint.
