The thatched main area incorporates a spacious furnished lounge and a well-stocked bar, both of which overlook the broad deck and the river beyond. Rustic meets easy glamour here, so you'll be very comfortable. Outside, there's plenty of alfresco seating, from intimate tables to the loungers that ring the swimming pool. Timber walkways lead to the open-sided dining area, which is dressed in finery come evening, when the East African-inspired five-course menu has become a highlight for many guests.
Wooden walkways lead to 12 wood-and-thatch chalets that are spaced well apart among the trees. With a classic safari feel and a bevy of creature comforts, they read old-school and feel modern, which is charming. Each has a large comfortable bed, with views of the surroundings through sliding screen doors. En-suite bathrooms have all luxuries, there's a second shower outside, and a private Jacuzzi. Mivumo Villa has three double en-suite bedrooms, with a central lounge and private plunge pool.
Nyerere National Park is four times the size of Serengeti and larger than Switzerland, with the highest concentration of elephants in the world – and many more species. Here, on the river, you may not have to move far to see wildlife – they often stroll into view. But the lodge's many offerings are tempting; boat cruises, guided walks, dedicated birding excursions are rewarding. Fishermen can try their luck, and the nearby natural hot spring, Maji Moto, tempts you to relax.
