About Serengeti Pioneer Camp

A 1930s-style tented camp with magnificent views of the hills of the central Serengeti.
Located on the sloping hills of the central Serengeti, and overlooking the Moru Kopjes, is Serengeti Pioneer Camp. All 12 of the canvas tents are reminiscent of the early pioneers and the glamour of 1930s safaris, but furnished with modern and fully-functional luxuries. It is across the great Serengeti plains that the wildebeest of the Great Migration roam, and the members of the Big Five lurk in the bushes and among the kopjes - spot them from the comfort of your tent, on a game drive, or even from the high reaches of a hot-air balloon safari.

Property details

The property

A firm favourite for relaxing around the camp, the lounge sits on a rocky outcrop with panoramic views of the Moru Kopjes and vast open plains. The rolled canvas and mesh sides, and high, makuti-thatched roof allow plenty of natural light to flood the room. Wooden chairs, soft couches and sun loungers offer plenty of relaxation in between game drives. The nearby dining tent is set with individual tables adorned with crisp white linen and paraffin lamps at night, and takes 'dining with a view' to a whole new level.

The rooms

Each of the 12 large tents are furnished with carefully chosen pieces that evoke the mobile camps of 1930 explorers, and you'll find period lamps, weathered dressers and hat stands in the bedroom, and romantic copper sinks in the bathrooms. All rooms have luxurious queen sized beds draped with a mosquito net, and an en-suite bathroom including a flushing toilet, vanity and hot shower. In the morning, take your favourite book outside and enjoy the first rays of sunshine from under the canvas covered awning.

Activities

There are two main activities on offer at this camp. On game drives through the Serengeti, you'll come within mere metres of some of Africa's most beautiful animals, from lion and giraffe, to elephant and buffalo. Book a picnic for the game drive and make a day of it, or track the herds of the Great Migration (from c. December to March). Otherwise, opt for the unmissable hour long balloon safari and see the same great beasts from new heights (but this does cost extra).
