One of the only camps in the Mara with a fully Maasai (and utterly fantastic) team of staff, Nkorombo is cosy, intimate and very, very friendly. The mess tent is low-key, relaxed and chock full of enormous cushions and snug sofas for river-watching in style. Lunch is usually under canvas in the dining tent but look out for the roaming dinners - sometimes under the stars, sometimes down by the river, but always ending in a customary campfire soiree (whisky optional).
Tucked into a shady grove of olive trees, the five Selous-style tents are perfectly traditional canvas havens. Solar power and authentic bucket showers in the ensuite bathrooms are reminiscent of safaris of yester-year (and very eco-friendly) and weathered wood beds and canvas chairs add a touch of down-to-earth design. For a siesta to remember, unzip your canvas door and let the sounds of the burbling Mara River (and accompanying hippo!) lull you into a deep sleep…
As with all Serian camps, every guest is treated to a private guide and vehicle so game drives can be as long or as short as you like. Settle down next to the river for the day with a long lens and a picnic or hop back and forth from camp to wildebeest– the choice is yours! Hot air balloon safaris are also on offer for a different view of the migration and staying in camp never dull. Don’t expect much peace and quiet however – those wildebeest are never far away…
Serian's Nkorombo is owned by Alex Walker's Serian, and founded on a profound respect for Kenya and Tanzania's wildernesses and cultures. Central to their ethos is preserving these areas by managing human interaction with wildlife. As populations grow and resources strain, Serian emphasizes making conservation profitable for locals. Note: a conservancy fee applies but is not included in the nightly rate.
