A historical jewel in the heart of Vientiane, it's impossible not to get wrapped up in the past as you enjoy the opulent decor and old-school antiques that are dotted around the hotel. Transport yourself back to the 1930s in the fabulous Belle Epoque Bar and sip a pre-dinner G&T before enjoying a three (or four or five) course dinner in the restaurant. The offerings take much influence from France, but there's also a traditional Laotian menu for those looking to sample something a little more local. Outside, take a wander in the tropical gardens or sit by the pool and leave the madness of the city behind.
The rooms at the Settha Palace are very elegantly decorated with plenty of rosewood furniture, high ceilings and vast wooden floors - just try pretending you're not in an Agatha Christie novel! All 23 rooms and 3 suites have views of the pool or the gardens, and gleaming Italian en-suite bathrooms. Junior Suites have an additional living space to relax in, and the Executive Suites are a little bit larger still and have two bathrooms.
It's imperative that you make the most of the sterling central location and explore everything Vientiane has to offer. There are plenty of museums to meander through, each one exploring a different aspect of the city's history, and the gilded temples are always worthy of a gaze. The markets will have you filling your suitcase with keepsakes, and there all manner of hidden cafes, boutiques and restaurants to be discovered down winding side streets.
Forget all preconceptions of a humming capital city and embrace Laos’ languid capital ‘village’
