Shamwari Private Game Reserve is one of the best known private reserves in South Africa’s malaria-free Eastern Cape, and tucked away in a secluded part of the rolling landscape is Riverdene Family Lodge. The elegantly-restored homestead is surrounded by manicured gardens, and views of the scenic Bushman’s River Valley are beautiful. As the name suggests, Riverdene is geared toward families and there's plenty of space for kids to play out on the (fully-fenced) lawns, and an epic "Kids on Safari" program. Game viewing is excellent, in particular cheetah and black and white rhino, and there’s the opportunity to visit the wildlife rehabilitation centre for something a bit different.

The main lodge consists of one large spacious lounge with comfortable sofas and deep armchairs placed around open fireplaces, a stylish dining room and an inviting bar area. There’s a small gift shop, and a kids club and outdoor adventure activities. Outside, a shady terrace overlooks the infinity pool which has a lovely shallow section that’s perfect for children. The lodge is surrounded by lush lawns.
Riverdene has nine double or twin en-suite bedrooms and sleeper couches and several with inter-leading doors - all are ideal for families. Interiors are spacious, comfortable and understatedly elegant. Each has a minibar, a microwave, a tea and coffee station and a TV, and all open out onto a private patio overlooking the lawns.
Early morning and late afternoon game drives offer the chance to see all of the Big Five, and Shamwari is particularly renowned for its excellent cheetah viewing. Look out for seldom-seen nocturnal creatures like brown hyena and aardvark during night drives. Guided walks are also offered (there's an age limit for children), and the excellent “Kids on Safari” program takes kids to the Animal Rehabilitation and Born Free Centres, as well as allowing play time at the lodge.
