Property details

The property

The hotel's decor draws on its natural surroundings, as does the dishes served at its restaurant, which are prepared with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. You can see it all being made in the live kitchen and expect to find a lot of seafood on the menu. There is also a lounge area with idyllic views over the harbour, where you can enjoy a drink as someone plays a tune on the grand piano. The onsen facilities include baths of varying temperatures including an open-air bath on the top floor.

The rooms

The hotel offers a range of western and Japanese rooms — or a combination of both, all of which are spacious and enjoy tranquil sea or mountain views. The rooms are streamlined with an understated style and cosy atmosphere. The grandest have a private spring-fed bath on the terrace as well as a sauna, and inside, there is a plush sitting area warmed by a fireplace. The rooms are all equipped with a TV, minibar, yukata robes and quality toiletries.

Activities

The hotel has a fantastic location for exploring the natural wonders of Shiretoko. Enjoy excursions into the national park, where you can spot wildlife, meander in between pristine lakes and hike along picturesque trails. You'll also have the change to go on a whale-watching boat ride or take a walk on the drift ice (from early February to late March). And there's always the steaming onsens awaiting you at the hotel to ease any aching muscles, with a spectacular view to boot.

The scenery is breathtaking (truly!) and taking in the view as you float in the warming onsen is, in a word, fabulous.

Certain rooms boast their own private onsen, which is definitely worth the added price tag.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The best time to go depends on your capacity for the cold and what you want to see. In late winter (late January to early April), ice drifts can be spotted as they float from Russia into the Okhotsk Sea.
