About Siruai Mobile Camp

Gazing over a wild and utterly private valley, Siruai promises a bona fide Laikipia safari

Springing up from a rocky ridge overlooking the lush Ewaso Narok River Valley and Laikipia Plateau, Siruai was built to frame the view and the wildlife that inhabits it. Its name alone alludes to this, translating to mean 'eland' in the Maa language and gazing out from your tent, you'll likely see these shy, regal animals around camp. Activities-wise, there is plenty of choice when it comes to exploring the surrounds, whether it's hiking up escarpments, canoeing down crystal-clear rivers, or spotting elephant, reticulated giraffe and Grevy's zebra on a game drive. Whichever it is, there'll be something worth toasting when you arrive back at camp.

Property details

The property

Set up within the private, 43,000-acre Suyian Ranch, this mobile camp is completely removable to keep it light on the environment. The mess tent is a classic canvas structure with a 'tarp veranda', communal dining area, bar and lounge. Although as long as the weather allows it, you'll often enjoy sundowners in the bush and dinner under the stars. At the end of the day, a fire is started at the escarpment's edge, where you can enjoy an incredible view and share stories from the day.

The rooms

On the hillside below the mess area, the canvas tents are set up according to the number of guests staying (with a maximum of 16 people). Roll-up sides reveal stunning views of Laikipia, while a barrier of netting keeps unwanted visitors out. A comfortable bed dominates the space, and there's plenty of open shelving and a vanity table for unpacking. Each tent has a flushing loo and hot bucket shower, which you'll be hankering for after a day of exploring.

Activities

Depart on morning or afternoon game drives across this diverse landscape, binoculars at the ready for herds of elephant, Grevy's zebra or buffalo, lone oryx, and the much-coveted leopard, cheetah or pack of African painted dogs. For the truly intrepid, discover the landscape on a walking safari or hike up the valley's escarpments for an increasingly beautiful view. Especially for families, spending a few hours swimming in a waterhole as rapids constantly replenish it is a great way to spend a few hours.

Why we love it

Why we love it

The number of tents Siruai sets up completely depends on the number of people staying. If it's just your group, you'll have the place to yourselves.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

For a memorable evening, request sundowners or dinner to be served in a secluded clearing in the bush.

Something to think about

The camp offers fly-camping atop a rock kopje in the valley, but it has to be pre-booked, so think ahead.
