About Six Senses Bumthang

Wrapped in nature from head to toe, this hillside lodge is a delight to the senses.
In Bhutan's spiritual heart where prayer flags flutter on the clifftops and chants of “Om Mani Padme Hung” can be heard across the valley, Six Senses is the place where life slows to a gentle pace. Surrounded by lofty blue pines, the lodge is known as a forest within a forest thanks to its furniture hand-crafted from recycled wood and trees that grow through the terrace floor. As you journey past grazing yaks, ancient temples and farms tucked into the crook of a valley, its easy to visualise days spent trekking to Buddhist monasteries and enjoying archery lessons in the fields.

Property details

The property

Meaning 'pine forest', the Tongtshang restaurant is cocoon of thick wooden columns and glass walls warmed by a wood-fired stove. In the dining room or out on the terrace, enjoy locally-grown staples and delicacies of air-dried yak, noodles and Bhutanese cheese. Partake in soothing treatments at the spa or soak your tensions away in the traditional dotsho bath. Spend a few hours with your nose in a book at the library, join yoga classes and watch the landscape turn orange with sundowners on the deck.

The rooms

On its pine-clad hillside, Six Senses has eight modest suites with timber floors, earthy, hand-woven fabrics and homely furnishings. Sliding glass doors reveal the tranquil view and open onto a cosy patio complete with a daybed. For families or larger groups, there is a solo two-bedroom villa with a living/dining area and spa facilities. In each suite, you'll also find a small courtyard where a pine sapling was planted to bring the outside in.

Activities

The valleys of Bumthang are at your fingertips with a range of hikes - such as those that lead you to the rugged Padseling Goemba fortress and meander through low-lying fields. With Bhutanese monuments in every direction, you can see some of the country's earliest paintings at the Tamzhing Lhundrup Lhakhang temple or visit the 'Castle of the White Bird' where great sieges were weathered. Travel to the Burning Lake where a legendary figure once emerged holding a lamp that was still alight.
