About Skeleton Coast Flying Safaris

A unique fly-in desert experience with the Schoeman Family in Namibia.
This spectacular, multi-day flying safari takes you on a birds-eye journey over one of the most enigmatic coastlines in Africa; Namibia's vast and rugged Skeleton Coast. Famous for its shipwreck "skeletons," you'll wind your way along the beach in a small plane, sometimes just a few hundred metres high, and marvel at the ever-changing geological formations and desert-adapted wildlife below. On the ground, you'll be whisked off in a Land Rover to drive through dunes and deserts, salt pans and floodplains and discover the country's wide diversity of unique flora and fauna. Starting in Swakopmund and ending at the oasis of the Kunene river on the border with Angola, with spectacular dunes, wildlife, and aerial scenery in between, this is one of those must-dos in Africa.

Property details

The property

From wild camping in the Huab River in Damaraland, to delightful tented camps amid the thorn trees and palms in the Hoarusib Valley in Kaokoland, this is not a safari if you're looking for plunge pools and Wifi. Instead, you'll open your tent flaps to oryx and kudu grazing just outside, munch on campfire-cooked dinners under the stars, and immerse yourself into the natural world that stretches in every direction.

The rooms

On your epic flying journey, you'll sleep in fully-equipped desert camps that seem to appear out of nowhere in the dramatic environments. Each of the unique camps varies in style, but all are comfortable. The dome tents come with proper beds (usually) and solar lights or lanterns, and there are hot bucket showers to wash away the dust at the end of the day. Flush loos are normally in a separate building.

Activities

For a majority of this safari, you will be flying along the Skeleton Coast, marveling at ancient landscapes and mind-boggling scenery. But once landed, there are a number of experiences and activities to enjoy too. Game drive around the desert and visit the 'roaring dunes' of the Namib; meet the nomadic, ochre-coloured Himba people and examine the ancient Bushman rock art; marvell at the colorful red lava and yellow sandstone of the Huab environs; and snap your camera at the panoramic vistas of the Hartmann Valley. Wow.
