Songa Migrational Camp - South

Each of the two sub-camps has its own main mess tent and lounge (the latter may be arranged outdoors if the weather is good, as it often is between December and April). Settle back and enjoy 360° views of the savannah plains. The mess tents-cum-lounge areas are simple shelters, but they're beautifully furnished with white tablecloths, directors' chairs, plush sofas and earthy African rugs. Lantern-lit at night, they conjure the romance of the earliest African safaris and settled round the fireplace, you'll feel at one with the wilderness.

Nestled beneath the leafy acacias, the tents are roomy, with a choice of comfortable twin or king-sized beds and the possibility of an extra twin bed. All have en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets, on-demand heated bucket showers and double vanities. Ostensibly just a "tent", these safari quarters are more beautifully appointed than their humble classification suggests. Expect crisp white linens and fluffy duvets on comfortable mattresses for a good night's rest before the next day's activities, and wide views from your furnished veranda.

Camp is set up in the southern Serengeti at the warmest time of year, when the weather is wonderful and the wildebeest have arrived (rains permitting) to give birth and feast on the sweet grasses - slinking predators on their tail. The decision to explore is up to you, but we suggest you follow the advice of your guides, who are experts in knowing the when, where and how-to of catching the best sightings. Vehicles have closed sides against the dust, but large windows and pop-top roofs allow you to capture precious moments on camera. Your location also means the chance to get up-close with nature on a walking safari!
