About Speke's Camp

A laid-back and secluded tented camp in a private Masai Mara concession
Speke’s Camp is a small tented camp in a great location between Kenya's Mara North Conservancy, Olare Orok Conservancy, and the main Maasai Mara Reserve. The set-up is traditional safari style with a distinct colonial-era feel in a wonderfully secluded spot amongst stands of indigenous woodland along the Olare Orok River. Nine canvas tents provide a good level of comfort, with owner-run hospitality and friendly local staff. This area is well known for its excellent game viewing, particularly the big cats, a variety of plains game, and vast herds of wildebeest during the annual migration between July and October.

Property details

The property

The guest area is a vast open-plan canvas tent with roll-down sides and a cosy feel, with a lounge, newly renovated dining and bar area lit in the evenings by candles and the soft glow of solar-powered lamps. A small terrace area opens out onto the outdoor dining spaces overlooking the surrounding plains. This camp is unfenced, and it's not unusual to see wildlife passing through as you tuck into your meals and traditional evening drinks around the crackling fire.

The rooms

Nine canvas en-suite tents are well spaced beneath a canopy of trees along the Olare Orok River, facing out into the woodland. Four doubles, two twins and two family tents offer comfortable and traditional safari accommodation, with understated luxury and a refreshingly airy and elegant feel. Bathrooms have flush toilets and bucket showers, with hot water on request. Tents open out onto a small veranda with comfortable armchairs. Solar-powered lighting keeps the environmental impact to a minimum, which makes you love Speke's even more.

Activities

Game drives take place in the main Maasai Mara Reserve, with the freedom to stay out all day if you wish. Wildlife is varied and offers some exciting game viewing, although it can feel crowded at times. Large prides of lion and other predators present in good numbers. During the annual wildebeest migration, vast herds of wildebeest move through the area, usually between July and October. We recommend the fabulous all-day walks across the Maasai plains to the Liota Hills.

Speke's is surrounded by three incredible game viewing locations and completely unfenced, so keep your eyes peeled - you could spot anything at any moment.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The meals are fabulous, whether it's breakfast as the wildlife wanders by or a candelabra-lit dinner. But the camp is very remote, so remember to let them know any dietary requirements in advance.
