Clear customs in Nairobi and within 45 minutes you can be out in the bush amongst a myriad of birdlife and four of the Big Five. Positioned on the edge of Nairobi National Park, surrounded by acacia trees, the Emakoko is a firm favourite with those not quite ready to face civilisation after their holiday. Unpretentious and simple but with all the comforts hosts Anthony and Emma go out of their way to make sure you are looked after. With easy game viewing on your doorstep and a host of activities available this is a gem of lodge.
The lodge is designed to fit seamless into its natural surrounds. Arriving at the lodge you walk along a foot bridge that leads to the main open-sided dining area with fireplace, the chalets extending alongside out into the cliff face. Below the terrace is a pool area perfectly positioned to look out over the river.
There are just ten cottages built into the cliff-face to maximise the views. Simple rondavel-shaped rooms with exposed beams and neat furnishings make for a comfortable night in the bush. Large, open plan bedrooms each have their own fireplace, walk in showers and verandas with camp seating overlooking the thorny trees. Some cottages are perched high on a gorge facing out into park-perfect for sunsets.
What is going to surprise you is the quality of wildlife to be found in Nairobi National Park. Game drives are lead by knowledgable staff as well as excursions available to the nearby David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and shops for that that last minute gift. The great location of the lodge means that it is perfect for hiking, an experienced guide can be arranged to accompany you and impart their knowledge of the fauna and flora as you go.
Lighting the fire in your room and cosying up under the duvet, before falling asleep to the roar of a lion or the cackle of a hyena.
Book the brand new two-bedroom house at the top of the hill, don't worry there is a lift, for the best views over the park. Rooms 6-9 also have fabulous views.
This is a great option if you are keen to avoid the city and transfer time from the airport is roughly the same as for hotels in Karen or Langata. However, whilst the game viewing is good, it cannot compare to its older brother the Masai Mara.
A buzzing metropolis of quirky eccentricities and a growing fashion, arts and cultural scene.
