About The Haven

Multi-faceted retreat in Uganda's Nile basin.
This well-placed ecolodge in Jinja, Uganda, clings to the banks of the northward-flowing Victoria Nile River, which connects Uganda's section of Lake Victoria with Lake Kyoga before spilling into Lake Albert and beyond. The Haven is an enormous property that incorporates campgrounds and chalets, many recreational facilities, and a picturesque restaurant overlooking the river's first rapid. At this point the river flows wide and is dotted with tree-filled islands. It's possible to see any number of wild creatures, from fish eagles to otters. It's also a rather budget-friendly option, ideal for families, backpackers, road trippers, and adventurers of many predilections.

Property details

The property

The Haven is a natural playground for tranquillity-seeking travellers, with plenty of space to sprawl out in the sun. Its generous grounds incorporate grassy areas, patios and dense clusters of trees. The swimming pool is a good start – it's surrounded by stone patios with cushioned loungers. Hammocks and thatched umbrellas entice between-activity snoozes. The cool indoor spaces are plentiful, as are recreational ones, from volleyball courts to football greens and sandpits. Wherever you are, the Nile views are mesmerising.

The rooms

The Haven can accommodate 60 guests in all, but because the grounds are so sprawling, you'd never know this was the case. There's a bring-your-own campsite, tents to hire, luxury bandas and bungalows, family chalets and a honeymoon suite. Tents offer the basics, with mattresses and bedding. The thatched, local-style bandas have king-sized beds, bathrooms, wi-fi and a hammock. Bungalows sleep three; two family bungalows and one family suite each sleep six. All have spacious interiors, porches, and stunning views.

Activities

Numerous activities are on offer, though the river waters are so calm that guests often give in to the impulse just to stare at it. Watch the sunrise alter its surface and waken the birdlife. Rent a canoe and explore the islands. Give fishing a go – for yellowfish, Nile perch and tilapia. Mountain bikes, horse riding and stand-up paddling are popular, as is the sunset river cruise. Get your adrenalin pumping by paddling the rapids below the lodge.
