The Last Word Kitara

Behind its authentic thatch-and-pole ceilings and stone walls, there are light and fresh spaces with modern ceramics and creamy fabrics. Meals are simple and superb, served under an ancient jackalberry tree, by the pool or in the sand-floor boma. On certain nights, there are even traditional South African braais to enjoy, followed by milk tart or malva pudding. The staff are friendly and very willing to assist with any and all requests, making the lodge feel increasingly like home. The infinity pool faces the bushveld and Klaserie River, and you may just have elephant joining you for a drink.

et on either side of the central living area, there are three stone and thatch cottages, each divided into two spacious suites. The comfy, four-poster beds are draped in crisp white Egyptian cotton sheets and pretty netting adorned with ostrich shell buttons, while the bathrooms are spacious with double basins, a Victorian-style tub, and indoor and outdoor showers (the latter are for day use only). The suites also boast a mini gin bar and well-stocked fridge, and you'll discover loads of thoughtful touches including Healing Earth amenities and a sweet treat at turn-down.

Kitara's general manager also happens to be the head guide and leads an extremely hands-on team of guides, trackers and rangers. Being in the private Klaserie Reserve, you will be able to drive off-road in order to follow wildlife and stay out in the bush after dark. There are a few large prides of lions that roam the area and several leopards who call it home. You can also enjoy a closer look at the landscape, finer details and birdlife on a guided bush walk.
