The Arabic translation of majlis is 'a gathering place', especially one for people with similar interests. So it's fitting that the upper-floor central bar and open-air lounge area have been built in beautiful traditional Swahili/Arabic style, with exquisitely carved doors and archways. Downstairs is an elegant space – soft white fabric highlights the carved light woods and bleached coral-block walls. There's also a beachside bar, a restaurant (local ingredients prepared with international flair), and a watersports and wellness centre.
The hotel has 39 beautifully appointed air-conditioned suites and deluxe rooms that are considered one of the most comfortable and available luxury accommodation options on the Kenya coast.
There's something for everyone on the island. Water-based activities include snorkelling, sailing, fishing, kite-surfing and highly recommended day trips to Kiwayu Island, with a picnic. Those of a cultural bent will enjoy the guided tours to nearby villages and the historical Lamu Town. The very adventurous can even attempt the swim across the channel (guided, of course). On site are two swimming pools and a wellness centre. And of course, a stroll along the beach is mandatory.
Uncover the magic of a bygone era on this sultry island that’s Kenya’s ultimate beach hideout.
