About The Mudhouse

A world away from sterile luxury and set deep in the jungle - this is the real Sri Lanka.
The clue is in the name at The Mudhouse, a group of simple, secluded and eco-friendly huts built using entirely traditional techniques. If you're looking to get under the skin of Sri Lanka and completely away from it all, this is the place to do it. The property is deep within lush green jungle and nature abounds, from the kingfishers that flitter around the lake to the occasional elephant that wanders through. Staffed by local villagers, it's also genuinely warm and friendly and guests can get as involved as they like in day to day activities, including tending to the home-grown fruit and veg and lighting the oil lamps when the sun goes down. The perfect spot for those seeking a simpler way of life...

Property details

The property

Remote, wonderfully wild, and set deep within a jungle wilderness, expect nothing more than a collection of humbly (but expertly) built huts. There's a central dining area overlooking the beautiful lake where you'll enjoy each of your meals - and there's definitely extra pleasure to be taken in knowing that all the recipes use seasonal ingredients, grown locally. If you don't feel like being sociable, private dining can also be arranged outside your sleeping hut.

The rooms

There are five huts to choose from, all with open sides, thatch roofs and alfresco bathrooms. Each of them are set in a cluster and some can sleep up to 12 people, but if you book as a couple, the collection of huts will still be exclusively yours. Expect your own living and relaxing hut, usually adorned with hammocks and squashy bean bags, and plenty of nooks to curl up with a book. The Original Mudhouse is all raised on stilts, whilst others have access to private gardens and courtyards.

Activities

You might be in the middle of nowhere but there's plenty to keep you occupied. Take a day-trip to the mythical looking Paramakanda Temple, learn new dishes from the charming chefs, borrow a bike and explore the nearby trails, kayak and paddleboard in the lake, practice solo yoga in the open-sided hut, visit the Friday market in Anamaduwa...You'll be grateful for your hammock after trying all that!

Something to think about

The electricity can be a little unreliable and there's no hot water but that's all part of the charm.
