About The Nest @ Sossus

Architecture imitates nature in deluxe style at this Namib Desert lodge.
The Nest @ Sossus is a marvel in more ways than one. Designed by the award-winning South African architect, Porky Hefer, the lodge is clearly inspired by the nests of sociable weavers, which build huge communal structures of grasses to stave off the desert heat. The lodge huddles in a valley in the Namib Tsaris Conservancy, on the edge of the Tsaris Mountains, about 80 kilometres east of Sossusvlei and its giant red sand dunes. The conservancy (previously Neuhof Nature Reserve) is home to a few natural pools and waterfalls, making it a magnet for thirsty wildlife, and discerning travellers.

Property details

The property

The communal area is built almost entirely of thatch, giving the impression that you're inside a giant weaver's nest – a feeling that's accentuated by the porthole/nest entrance-like windows. At its centre is the lounge, with a large, semicircular leather couch. To one side is a library; to the other, the dining area and open-plan kitchen. The stylish furniture is made by African designers. Outdoors are various seating areas beneath camelthorn trees, plus a pool and a children's play area.

The rooms

This exclusive-use lodge, ideal for families and groups of friends, has three spacious and streamlined double suites, plus a children's room. The adults' rooms are thatched from roof to wood/stone floor. The children's room is of plaster and has a bunk bed emulating a smaller nest; the adults' king-sized beds are of Namibian wood. Don't expect right angles – everything is built, weaver-style, into the unit. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, and either a veranda or balcony with seating.

Activities

The conservancy is home to wildlife ranging from gemsbok and springbok to giraffe, cheetah and even leopard. Explore on foot by yourself or with a guide, or on a game drive, or park off at the waterhole and let the wildlife come to you. The lodge is a 45-minute drive from the Sossusvlei entrance gate to the Namib-Naukluft Park – spend a day exploring the magnificent dunes and salt pans. Aerial tours can be organised, at a price.
