Nestled in the leafy, jacaranda-lined neighbourhood of Houghton in Johannesburg, The Residence Hotel is true delight to behold. Each and every piece was personally chosen by the owners, from richly-patterned rugs to chandeliers and gilded portraits. Outside, the gardens are filled with greenery, creating a tranquil retreat from bustling Joburg – especially if you're in a suite with a hot tub. If you do choose to venture out, there are plenty of pursuits to enjoy nearby and the hotel team simply cannot be faulted in their service and recommendations.

The Residence has two swimming pools to choose from and there's always a free sun lounger to laze upon. Along with a well-stocked bar, there is also a number of cosy sitting and dining areas, dripping in vintage style and often with a light twinkle of piano music accompanying dinner. For breakfast, a hearty buffet is served, including freshly-squeezed juices, and there is also a gym and spa, which comes with a sauna and steam room – perfect for getting that safari dust out of your pores.
The Residence is small and intimate with just eight luxury rooms and five suites. Charming and comfortable, each has a king-sized, extra-length bed topped with goose down pillows and Egyptian cotton. The suites (one of which is dedicated to former president, Nelson Mandela) are, of course, the most spacious and most have a fireplace, hot tub and private balcony with a dining area. The Penthouse Suite has a beautiful skylight and rooftop garden overlooking the lights of Houghton and Rosebank.
At the hotel, enjoy lazing poolside, strolling through the gardens or a game of tennis. Alternatively, book a day trip with one of the in-house tour guides – there are plenty of options, including visits to Johannesburg Art Gallery, Constitution Hill and the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens. For golfing enthusiasts, the hotel is minutes away from two top-notch courses and if you're up for a little (or a lot of) shopping, there are plenty of nearby hotspots to explore. The historic Nelson Mandela Houghton Estate is just down the road as well.
