You're hooked from the moment you're faced with the building's dimensions, its columned terraces, black and white diamond tiles, and wooden doors and floors. The 21st-century upgrade has been discreet, and plenty of the original charm shines through (especially in the exposed-brick wall that dates back to the original construction). The atmosphere, however, is decidedly contemporary, with a state-of-the-art pool, and a rooftop terrace that showcases the views. Inside is the modern dining room and bar, and a comfortable lounge.
Eighteen contemporary rooms are all fitted out in a neutral palette of whites and greys, with little ornamentation, but good in-room amenities. High ceilings and king-sized beds make for spacious and sumptuous living; en-suite bathrooms have either a shower or bath/shower combo. Air-conditioning, heating, flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities are at your fingertips. The old-school grace comes through in the bay windows, stone walls, and French doors that lead either to the garden or balcony.
Cape Town is a city of exceptional natural beauty. Framed by Table Mountain and flanked by two oceans, it's much loved for its gorgeous beaches, rocky coves, dramatic gorges, knobby peaks, prolific plant life – even penguins! It's also a hub for arts and culture, with numerous museums, craft and food markets, and exciting boutiques. And they're all within easy reach. Beyond the CBD limits are 400-year-old winelands, where you can sample exceptional varietals on classic Cape Dutch estates.
