About The Wallawwa

The ultimate fly-and-flop location for the travel weary - plus a bit more.
Don't be put off by The Wallawwa being only a 15 minute drive from Colombo's international airport, for this serene spot really feels like a world away from planes, trains and automobiles. In fact, we really don't think there's a better spot to recharge your batteries before you start to explore, or to decompress after an adventure. The 200-year old country house hotel is set in lush tropical gardens, filled with gorgeous flowers, and with a beautiful pool to laze by, delicious food to eat, and a spa to work on tired muscles. Add a cool drink and a warm smile, and you may never leave.

Property details

The property

The Wallawwa has a long-reaching history and was even repurposed by Lord Mountbatten and his men during WWII. Suffice to say, you'll feel the wealth of culture and history as soon as you step through the door. Fast forward to today and there's a lovely garden to roam, a pool to swim in, a library to wander and a gift shop to explore. The food at Wallawwa is also known to be outstanding: bisques, hoppers and curries will delight your senses, and there's a full bar in case you fancy a post-dinner tipple too.

The rooms

From the simple but stylish Wallawwa bedrooms to the grand Mountbatten Suite, there's something for everyone and they are all guaranteed to be gorgeous (and enormous!). Amenities are modern but there are a few quirky design touches like vintage telephones dotted around. All rooms enjoy garden views, air-conditioning, rain showers, mini bars and TVs, and the Mountbatten suite also has a bathtub and private pool. There are family suites with interconnecting bedrooms for those travelling with kids in tow.

Activities

There's plenty at Wallawwa, and just outside the doors, to entertain. Take a trip to the traditional Negombo Fish Market for an authentic local experience, or simply wander around the streets. Colombo walking, art and culture tours can also be arranged, as can cookery demonstrations, visits to cigar factories and lagoon trips. Both Negombo and Colombo are good spots to stock up on souvenirs if you're at the end of your trip - but go easy if you're just beginning.

Insiders Tip

If you're looking for a little extra space, plump for a garden suite which comes with its own private veranda.

Something to think about

Some of the bathrooms don't have bathtubs, which is a little disappointing.
