Back in the 1970s, this shady spot on the banks of the Luangwa was Norman Carr’s green season base. Today, the ultra sleek and very stylish Chinzombo Camp has replaced the tents of old and given the area a new lease of life. Peaceful and tranquil and offering a good dose of luxury, the camp is a good option for some pre or post safari relaxation. But with 60 acres of private land on offer, a river teeming with wildlife and direct access to the National Park via boat, the game drives are exclusive, breath-taking and not to be missed.

Built around stately mahogany trees, the main area is an expanse of contemporary white-washed decking and clean lines balanced with squashy beanbags and traditional wooden furniture. Old photographs and artefacts line the shelves and there’s something to marvel at in every direction, not forgetting the wildlife meandering down the bank to drink at the river below. Lunch tables are dotted around on the deck by the reflection pools and in the evening, dinner is usually served al fresco under the stars.
The 6 villas are beautifully designed and filled with all the finishing touches you would expect and more. King size beds are draped in fine linens and cooled by a state-of-the-art air conditioning system and the vast bathroom and dressing areas have walk-in showers, double basins and elegant bath tubs with views to kill. Outside, choose between the sun loungers, sunken seating area or private plunge pool for a lazy afternoon’s break from game drives.
Game drives (and walking safaris on request) are conducted in the Mfuwe sector of the park. Wildlife is prolific and sightings spectacular especially with Abes and Shaddy’s expert knowledge. If the area starts to get a little busy in peak season, pack a picnic and head to one of the more remote corners of this vast wilderness. From December, the park bursts into full, green glory and boating down the river is possible, especially if combined with a stay at sister camp, Kakuli.
If Ralph Lauren did safaris, he would have designed Chinzombo: contemporary, stylish and super-sleek, you’ll never have been or seen anywhere like it.
With spa treatments and private plunge pools, Chinzombo is as much about relaxation as it is incredible game drives so leave some time to enjoy all that’s on offer.
Although walking safaris can be done, you won’t be able to walk right out of camp. Instead, you’ll drive to an area and hop out of the vehicle for a stroll around.
The Time + Tide Foundation is dedicated to preserving natural environments and supporting nearby communities, and guests contribute to sustainability purely by visiting their properties. The foundation focuses on community and school-based learning, female empowerment, health, and wildlife conservation. Through initiatives like student sponsorship, it aims to ensure the long-term prosperity of wildlife economies and foster positive social change in Time + Tide communities. A contribution of $10 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
